I've found it hard to write about it (although it has sent me back to the poems, which can't be a bad thing), but I share your reservations about the stone. There's another contrast, and that is with the small, restrained memorial tablet to Betjeman in the church at nearby St Endellion - not perfect either, but at least it passes the test of legibility. This was designed, carved in relief on slate and placed in the church in 2006 by Philip Chatfield, a sculptor who works in the tradition of Eric Gill, and whose work I much admire. Remarkably, Chatfield was himself a survivor of this wreck, having been a member of the crew. This is the only shipwreck memorial in Britain to have been carved by a survivor of the wreck being commemorated. T...Adrian, I agree about the over ornate tombstone. The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop could have produced something far more appropriate. Yet, they too might have had their hands tied by family wishes . . . Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07119180758113013415noreply@blogger.com
